E Visa Turkey 2026: How to Apply, Who Needs It, Rules

An e visa Turkey application is made online at the official website, www.evisa.gov.tr, and gives eligible foreigners permission to enter Türkiye for tourism or commerce without visiting an embassy. Before you apply, check whether you need one at all: citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, China and most EU countries are visa-exempt for short visits.

This guide explains who needs a Turkey e-Visa, the extra conditions some nationalities must meet, how to apply step by step, what to carry at the border and what the e-Visa does not allow. It is based on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa information and announcements of Turkish missions, checked on 13 October 2026.

Key points

  • The only official e-Visa website is evisa.gov.tr. Other sites resell the same e-Visa at a mark-up.
  • The e-Visa is valid only for tourism or commerce. Work and study require a visa from a Turkish mission.
  • Some nationalities, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Philippines, qualify only with a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit, and electronic visas from those countries are not accepted as supporting documents.
  • The e-Visa website does not check your supporting documents. Airlines and border officers do.
  • An e-Visa cannot be extended. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit before your permitted stay ends.

What Is the Turkey e-Visa?

The Electronic Visa Application System was launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 17 April 2013. It replaces the visa sticker obtained at a Turkish embassy, or at the border, for nationalities that the Ministry has made eligible. You enter your identity, passport and travel details, pay online and download the e-Visa. According to the Ministry, the application takes about three minutes and can be made at any time from anywhere with an internet connection.

The e-Visa is a visa in the legal sense. Under Law No. 6458 on Foreigners and International Protection, a visa or visa exemption allows a stay of no more than 90 days in any 180 days (Art. 11(1)), and holding a visa does not give an absolute right of entry: border officers can still refuse entry if the conditions are not met. Our overview of Turkish visa types explains how the e-Visa fits alongside work, student and other visas.

Who Needs an e-Visa for Turkey?

Every nationality falls into one of four groups under the Ministry’s rules for ordinary passports:

Group What to do Examples
Visa-exempt No e-Visa needed; travel with your passport within the permitted stay United States, United Kingdom (tourism), Canada, Australia, China, Germany, France, Saudi Arabia
e-Visa without conditions Apply at evisa.gov.tr before travel Mexico, South Africa, Vietnam, Armenia, Jamaica, Taiwan, Southern Cyprus
Conditional e-Visa e-Visa only with a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit; otherwise apply at a Turkish mission India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan
Visa required No e-Visa; apply at a Turkish embassy or consulate Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Cuba, Syria

For Algeria, Egypt, Iraq and Libya the rule depends on the traveller’s age. Egyptians under 15 or over 45, for example, can get an e-Visa without conditions, while those aged 15 to 45 need a supporting visa and must fly with one of the airlines named by the Ministry.

Conditional e-Visa: The Supporting Document Rules

If your nationality is in the conditional group, the e-Visa is only the first step. Turkish missions have published the conditions that border officers apply:

  • Sticker or card only: the supporting visa or residence permit must be from a Schengen country, the USA, the UK or Ireland. The Turkish Embassy in New Delhi states that e-visas from other countries are not accepted, and the Consulate General in Los Angeles states that officers recognise only valid sticker US, Schengen or Irish visas or Green Cards.
  • Valid on the day you enter: the supporting document must be valid on your date of entry into Türkiye and shown in original at passport control.
  • Return ticket, hotel and funds: according to the Consulate General in Los Angeles, you must be able to show a return ticket, a hotel reservation and at least USD 50 for each day of your stay.
  • Tourism or business only, and entry through an airport. The same note states that the conditional e-Visa does not apply at land border crossings.

The e-Visa website does not verify your supporting document; it relies on what you type. If the document does not meet the criteria, the airline can refuse boarding and the border officer can refuse entry, even though you hold an e-Visa. If your UK, US or Schengen permission exists only in digital form, confirm with a Turkish mission before relying on it. Our country guides cover the details for Indian and Pakistani citizens.

How to Apply for a Turkey e-Visa: Step by Step

  1. Go to the official website by typing www.evisa.gov.tr yourself rather than clicking an advert. Look-alike sites often appear above it in search results.
  2. Select your country of nationality and travel document. The system shows whether you are eligible and any conditions that apply to you. If your nationality is not eligible, it directs you to apply for a sticker visa at a Turkish mission.
  3. Enter your planned arrival date. Your trip must fall within the e-Visa’s validity.
  4. Enter your personal and passport details exactly as they appear in the passport you will travel with. The e-Visa is linked to that passport.
  5. Answer the supporting-document questions if you are in the conditional group, giving the details of your Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit.
  6. Pay online. Visa and Mastercard are accepted, as well as other commonly used credit and debit cards. The fee depends on your nationality and is shown before payment; see our Turkey e-Visa fee guide.
  7. Download your e-Visa and keep a printed or digital copy for check-in and passport control.

Tour operators can apply for group e-Visas for their customers. If you applied through another website and are unsure whether your e-Visa is genuine, the official site has a status check at evisa.gov.tr/en/status/.

What to Carry When You Travel

  • Passport: the Ministry advises at least six months’ validity from your arrival date. Under Law No. 6458 the legal minimum is 60 days beyond the end of your permitted stay, so a 90-day stay requires 150 days of validity on entry.
  • Your e-Visa, issued for the same passport.
  • Supporting visa or residence permit in original, if you are in the conditional group.
  • Return ticket, hotel booking and proof of funds, which officers can ask any visitor about and which conditional e-Visa holders must be able to show.

How Long Does a Turkey e-Visa Take?

The application itself takes a few minutes. The Ministry does not publish a guaranteed processing time, so apply well before you fly rather than at the airport, and allow extra time if you are in the conditional group. Do not book non-refundable travel on the assumption that you qualify until you have checked your nationality’s conditions on the official website.

How Long Can You Stay on an e-Visa?

The permitted stay depends on your nationality and is shown on the e-Visa. Examples from the Ministry’s list: Mexican and Vietnamese citizens get single-entry e-Visas for stays of up to 30 days; Jamaican, Bahamian and Barbadian citizens get three-month multiple-entry e-Visas; conditional e-Visas for India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are single-entry and valid for one month. In every case the overall limit of 90 days in any 180 days applies.

An e-Visa cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, apply for a short-term residence permit before your permitted stay ends; our guide to Turkey visa extension explains the options. Staying beyond your permitted period leads to a fine on departure and can lead to an entry ban; see our Turkey overstay fine guide.

What the e-Visa Does Not Allow

  • Work or study: the e-Visa is valid only when the purpose of travel is tourism or commerce. Employment requires a work visa and work permit; study requires a student visa from a Turkish mission.
  • Entry on a different passport: if you renew your passport, the e-Visa issued for the old one does not transfer.
  • Guaranteed entry: under Law No. 6458 a visa does not give an absolute right of entry. Border officers can refuse entry, for example where there is an entry ban or the conditions of the visa are not met.
  • Residence: long stays require a residence permit, applied for in Türkiye before the e-Visa period ends.

e-Visa vs Sticker Visa

e-Visa Sticker visa
Where to apply Online at evisa.gov.tr Turkish embassy, consulate or authorised visa centre
Purpose Tourism and commerce only All purposes, including work and study
Biometrics Not required May be required
Cost Usually lower; the Turkish Embassy in New Delhi states at least USD 85 less for Indian applicants Visa fee plus visa centre service fee where applicable
Time Minutes to apply online Appointment and processing time

Beware of Unofficial e-Visa Websites

Many websites with “Turkey”, “Turkiye” or “e-Visa” in their name sell the Turkish e-Visa. The Turkish Embassy in New Delhi warns that all websites other than evisa.gov.tr claiming to provide the e-Visa are not official and that they charge more than twice the official fee. Turkish missions also state that they cannot intervene in individual e-Visa applications; questions go through the contact form on the official website.

Refused Entry or Problems With Your e-Visa?

Problems usually arise when a traveller in the conditional group relies on a document that does not qualify, enters details that do not match the passport, or has an earlier overstay or entry ban on record. If you have been refused boarding or entry, or need to know whether a past overstay affects you, see our guide to the Turkey visa refusal letter or instruct our immigration lawyers to review your case.
