Translator İzmir Yeminli Tercüman: Sworn English–Turkish Translation

Translator İzmir yeminli tercüman services are what you need when an İzmir office, notary or court asks for an official Turkish translation of your English document, or when a Turkish document has to be used in an English-speaking country. A yeminli tercüman is a sworn translator: Av. Gökhan Vural is a notary-authorised sworn translator for English and Turkish; in this work he acts as a translator, not as your lawyer. Our office in Konak also arranges the notarisation and, where a document can be apostilled, the apostille.

Key Takeaways

  • We translate between English and Turkish only.
  • Translation costs 600 TL per page, and 300 TL per page for passports; the notary fee is charged separately.
  • In Turkey a sworn translation is certified by a notary, who confirms the translator’s identity and signature.
  • In İzmir, administrative documents are apostilled by the apostille officers appointed by the İzmir Governorship; court documents are apostilled by the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office of the courthouse that issued them.
  • Documents from countries outside the Apostille Convention, such as Iran, need consular certification instead.

What is a sworn translator (yeminli tercüman) in Turkey?

A sworn translator is a translator who has taken an oath before a notary, so that the notary can certify their translations. Turkey has no separate translation law; sworn translation runs under the Notaries Law No. 1512 and its regulation. The notary must be satisfied of the translator’s language skills, administers the oath and keeps a record of it with the translator’s details and signature.

A sworn translator is authorised for specific languages. Av. Gökhan Vural is sworn for English and Turkish only, so we do not take documents in other languages.

How does a notarised translation work in İzmir?

The sworn translator translates the document, signs and seals it, and a notary in İzmir then certifies the translator’s identity and signature. The steps with our office are:

  1. You send us a scan or photo of the document, or bring the original to our office in Konak.
  2. We confirm the number of pages and the price before starting.
  3. Av. Gökhan Vural translates the document and signs it as sworn translator.
  4. The translation is certified by the notary; the notary fee is paid separately.
  5. If needed, we arrange the apostille, then hand over or send you the finished document.

How much does a sworn translation in İzmir cost?

Our translation fee is 600 TL per page, and 300 TL per page for passports. The notary’s certification fee is not included and is charged separately. We confirm the page count from your scan before you commit, so you know the translation cost in advance.

Where do I get an apostille in İzmir?

In İzmir, the apostille authority depends on the type of Turkish document:

  • Administrative documents, such as civil registry records or documents from public offices, are apostilled by the İzmir Governorship (Valilik). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says governorships or district governorships are competent (Ministry of Foreign Affairs: document certification).
  • Judicial documents, such as court decisions, are apostilled by the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office (Cumhuriyet Başsavcılığı) at the courthouse that issued the document. The document must bear the stamp of the prosecutor, the judge or the chief court clerk; without it, it cannot be apostilled.
Document Where it is certified Route
Turkish administrative document (civil registry record, public office document) İzmir Governorship Apostille
Turkish court document Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office of the issuing courthouse Apostille; needs the stamp of the prosecutor, judge or chief court clerk
Foreign document from an Apostille Convention country (e.g. UK, US) The issuing country Apostille there, then sworn Turkish translation and notarisation in Turkey
Foreign document from a non-party country (e.g. Iran) Turkish mission abroad, or that country’s mission in Turkey Translation certified by the Turkish mission; or certification by that country’s mission in Turkey, then by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a governorship

For countries that are not party to the Apostille Convention, documents go through the procedure set by the bilateral agreements between Turkey and that country. In Turkey, documents certified by a Turkish consulate, whether judicial or administrative, are accepted as valid under the Code of Civil Procedure. An apostilled document cannot also be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Our office handles the apostille for documents that can be apostilled, so you do not need to visit these offices yourself.

Do I need an apostille on my foreign documents for use in İzmir?

Usually yes. A document issued abroad must carry an apostille from the issuing country if that country is a party to the Apostille Convention; it is then translated into Turkish and notarised here. The United Kingdom and the United States are parties. Saudi Arabia has been a party since 7 December 2022, so Saudi documents now need an apostille rather than consular legalisation.

Documents from countries outside the Apostille Convention

Iran is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so Iranian documents cannot be apostilled. For a foreign document from a non-party country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes two routes:

  • a sworn translation into Turkish certified by the Turkish mission in that country, attached to the original; or
  • certification by that country’s mission in Turkey, followed by certification by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ankara or a governorship.

Note that we translate only English and Turkish, so for a document in Farsi or Arabic you will need a translator for that language; we can advise on the certification route.

Which İzmir offices ask for sworn translations?

Most of our translation work in İzmir is for documents submitted to public offices and notaries. Typical examples include:

  • passports and supporting documents for residence permit files at the İzmir migration office (see our guide to the residence permit in Turkey);
  • passports and powers of attorney for a property transfer at the land registry (see buying property in İzmir);
  • passports, company documents and powers of attorney for registering a company at the İzmir Trade Registry;
  • foreign court decisions, birth and marriage certificates for civil registry and court matters.

Each office decides what it accepts, so check with them, or ask us, whether they need a notarised translation, an apostille, or both.

Should I get my documents translated before coming to İzmir?

If your documents are for use in Turkey, it is usually simplest to get the apostille in your home country and the sworn translation done here.

A translation made abroad may be refused in Turkey. It is accepted only through the routes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sets out, such as certification by the Turkish mission; without that step, the translation may have to be done again here.

What our office does as a yeminli tercüman in İzmir

E-Law Turkey (Vural Hukuk Danışmanlık ve Mütercim Hizmetleri) is based in Konak, İzmir. In translation work:
